What Are Carrots?

Carrots are root vegetables originating from Afghanistan around 900 AD. While orange is the most common color, they also come in purple, yellow, red, and white. The orange variety was developed in Central Europe in the 15th century. Carrots have a sweet, earthy, or slightly bitter flavor, varying by color and growing conditions. They are nutritious, supporting eye, heart, and dental health.

Organic vs. Nonorganic Carrots:

Organic carrots are grown with natural fertilizers and fewer pesticides, while nonorganic carrots may have pesticide residues due to conventional farming practices.

Types of Carrots:

Imperator: Long with a tapered tip.
Nantes: Medium length with a blunt tip.
Danvers: Medium length and large.
Chantenay: Short with broad shoulders.
Purple: Original carrots, high in antioxidants.
Rainbow: Varieties in yellow, red, white, and purple.

Nutrition and Calories:

A half-cup serving of carrots contains approximately 25 calories, 6g carbohydrates, 2g fiber, and provides significant vitamin A, K, potassium, and vitamin C. Baby carrots can have around 35 calories per 100g. Cooked carrots have similar nutritional values.

Health Benefits of Carrots:

May reduce cancer risk due to antioxidants.
Support heart health by regulating blood pressure.
Boost immune function with vitamin C.
