Food For Thought
As important as we know exercise is, it's not enough by itself. What you put into your body is just as important, and these things together contribute greatly towards a healthier, happier lifestyle.

Is capsicum beneficial for your health?

Capsicums, also known as bell peppers or sweet peppers, are grown globally and are a staple in various cuisines. They are incredibly versatile and can be consumed raw or cooked.

Originating from South and Central
America, capsicum was introduced to Europe by Christopher Columbus after his journey to the Americas. Historical records indicate that capsicum has been used in culinary practices since around 6000 BC.

Capsicums are available in different colors, including red, yellow, orange, and green (which are immature). Green capsicums have a slightly bitter taste and are less sweet compared to their fully ripened counterparts. The
most common variety is bell-shaped, featuring four lobes.

Red capsicums tend to be sweeter than green ones, although they soften more quickly.

Orange capsicums are sweet and crunchy, while yellow capsicums have a milder flavor.

Green capsicums, while nutritious, are less sweet compared to the red, yellow, and orange varieties and are versatile enough to be enjoyed both raw and cooked. They contain fewer carotenoids and flavonoids but have
higher levels of phenolic acids compared to their colored counterparts.

In terms of health benefits, capsicums are low in calories and rich in vitamin C and other antioxidants, making them a valuable addition to a healthy diet. Consuming capsicum in moderation daily can promote a nutritious diet and may be beneficial for individuals with diabetes.

Red capsicums are not only tasty but also nutrient-dense, being high in vitamin C, which supports immune health and collagen production crucial
for skin vitality. They contain no unhealthy fats and are low in calories, making them advantageous for weight loss.

However, individuals suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease or irritable bowel syndrome should steer clear of capsicum, as it may worsen these conditions.
Capsicum could also have an effect on blood sugar levels. If taken alongside diabetes medications, it might lead to an excessively low blood sugar level, so it is important to monitor blood sugar levels closely.
